Head of Incident Management, Nihon Cyber Defence (Northern Ireland)
United Kingdom

I am Head of Incident Management for Nihon Cyber Defence. I have responsibility for leading our Incident Management capability in UK and Europe. I am focused on the delivery of cybersecurity preparedness, resilience and cyber crisis management. With over 30 years of experience within the Police including the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), I have worked on web based investigations, with a focus on firearms procurement, darknet , insider threats , data breaches and international cyber criminality. At World Police Summit I am representing Northern Ireland and Invest NI.

In the context of individuals and businesses facing the constant challenge of cyber threats it is within my remit to identify, assess and prevent these attacks. I support clients in the management and maintenance of their cyber security and response activity. I work alongside those same clients to create security architecture plans, roadmap strategies, response plans and business cases.

I have come to NCD following a short period in cyber consultancy and following a 31-year career in Law Enforcement. I spend almost the last decade of my career in PSNI’s Cyber Crime Centre. During that time, I was responsible for providing digital forensic services to the organisation from networks or seized media for all crime types. I also had responsibilities as the Senior Investigating Officer for cyber dependent crime in Northern Ireland and that crime perpetrated on others by criminal elements within Northern Ireland. My investigative experience has ranged from investigations originating on the dark net to those involving international OCG’s deploying ransomware on Northern Ireland businesses, charities and academic institutions.

As lead for PSNI Cyber I engaged with law enforcement and government agencies across the world to embed PSNI in the global fight against cybercrime. During my tenure I lead the redefinition of PSNI’s ransomware response to shift the focus from suspect to victim and prioritise PSNI’s role as a critical friend. These relationships have been maintained following my transition to the private sector.

I have experience in leading investigations into business email compromise, ransomware, insider threat and network breaches. I have continued with,  and evolved those responsibilities since coming onboard with Nihon Cyber Defence.

Personally, I live and work in Belfast, Northern Ireland with my wife Lynda and daughter Ellie.

I hold a Master of Science qualification in Forensic Computing and Cyber Investigations from University College Dublin.
